I pulled up the Find My app on my iPhone and could see the last time my dog was located was 9 minutes ago. It’s easy to test if the tracking is working, I was at the grocery store and my wife at home with our dog. It’s all encrypted and secure, only you will know the location of the AirTag and what the AirTag is attached to.įor me, I felt it was cheap insurance that my dog would come back home if something bad happened and she was wondering the neighborhood. Oh and tracking coverage is world wide! Anyone with an iPhone will be able to detect your pup’s AirTag and it’s location will be sent to your iPhone. Maintenance would be $4 for a battery every year. So for $44, you can have an insanely powerful tracking device for your dog. The collars and holders vary a lot in price, but a basic leather holder is about $15. Their battery lasts a year and can be replaced easily – they use the same battery that goes into car remote unlock key fobs. Think of why you add a metal tag to your dog with your phone number on it…to make it more likely (and easier) for the dog to be reunited with you.Įven if they don’t have an iPhone, all people have to do is touch the AirTag with their device and they’ll see your email and phone number to contact you and get your pup back.ĪirTag’s themselves are cheap – $29 for one or $99 for four. Even more so if the dog is caught.ĪirTags aren’t a complete solution to never loosing your dog, it’s just an extra layer of security and possibility for your dog to be found and returned to you. So if you loose your dog somewhere remote, AirTags won’t be much help, unless by chance a hiker or someone randonly happens to have an Apple device and comes within range of it.īut if your dog gets loose from the back yard and is running around the neighborhood, chances are higher that someone (anyone) with an iPhone will come into contact with it. The only problem with AirTags is that they’ll only be useful if other people around the AirTag have an iPhone, iPad or other Apple device that uses the “ Find My” network. The AirTag is up out of the way and won’t have any opportunity to get caught on something. If you don’t want to get a collar, look into the silicone molded AirTag holders that sits over the dog collar. Having a small metal tag with your contact details and a phone number is one thing, but an AirTag and holder is WAY bigger and can be prone to catching on something. I would steer clear of anything that dangles from your dogs neck and can get caught. A silicone/leather/polycarbonate (plastic) shell that dangles from your dogs collar.A silicone holder that attaches to the collar. There are three main styles for attaching an AirTag to your dog: You can find more information on the Nomad online store here. I would love to see Nomad make a collar that has a waterproof, dust proof pouch for the AirTag. Unless your dog is a part time mermaid, i don’t think you need complete waterproofing. AirTags are already splash, water and dust resistant. Nomad has beefed up their AirTag holder so it’s water and dust proof – this might peak your interest if your dog is frequently in and out of water – but for everyone else, it’s unnecessary. I worry about it getting caught on something. Not massive, but a bit too big to dangle from a dog’s collar I think. If you’ve never seen an AirTag in person, they’re larger than you think. The AirTag is just left dangling there on the dog. I’m a bit underwhelmed with this offering. You can also opt to have the dogs name engraved onto an insert that slips into the AirTag holder. The Nomad AirTag holder is durable, water and dust proof. Nomad will supply a holder for the AirTag that clips onto your existing collar. Just to be clear, you aren’t buying a collar or an AirTag here. This rugged AirTag holder from Nomad is my #4 spot. Use a keyring so it’s smooth and won’t catch. If you do choose these leather pouches for your dog and AirTag setup, don’t use the metal wire looking things to attach it to your dog’s collar. Maybe for a larger dog these would work, but I still think a collar with a built in pouch for the AirTag is the way to go. It dangles quite low when she’s standing up with her head up and I bet it’s annoying. I tried these leather pouches out and they work well, but they’re a bit too big looking for my dog. I was an early adopter to AirTags and not many companies had made an AirTag solution for dogs yet. This option uses a leather pouch to slide the AirTag into, then the pouch attaches to your dog’s collar.
