Even though most functions can be done in one or two taps, the basic simplicity of a volume and temperature dial will be missed. We’d prefer bigger icons, but a pre-drive panel, with a setting for defrosters and heated seats, pops up before getting underway. The two most-used icons, volume and temperature, are prominent enough, anchored in on-screen sidebars, and there’s a volume dial on the steering wheel, too, all of which respond with appropriate speed. Aside from the headlamp and wiper stalks aft the steering wheel, all vehicle controls are confined to the central touchscreen. The Velar’s 11.4-inch curved touchscreen infotainment display is put to good use here, mimicking the svelte exterior, the uncluttered look banishing every knob, switch and button to the gallows of motoring history. Inside the Velar (the name was used for the very first Range Rover prototypes in the late 1960s) is where the 2024 model clearly catches up to its competition, which includes the BMW X3, Porsche Macan and Mercedes GLE. Interior features in the Range Rover Velar Today, Range Rover calls the freshened look “reductive new design.” Which more or less means getting rid of anything that belies the SUV’s clean, minimalist look, hence why it retains those nifty flush mount door handles and such an elegant shape that it has worn for so many years now it’s a design philosophy that has also spread to the larger, full-size Range Rover, which is currently so popular it can take months to get one. “Design is at the core of everything we do,” explained McGovern at the time of the Velar’s introduction.
